Coat of arms

[Castanheira (Mogadouro) commune CoA] image by Sérgio Horta, 1 Mar 2016

Shield Or, a saltire Gules and over all a chestnut tree Sable eradicated Sable, leaved Vert and "emphasized" Argent, fruited Vert and open Argent (no mention of the fruits in the official blazon, even though they are illustrated). Mural crown Argent with three visible towers and white scroll reading in black upper case letters "CASTANHEIRA - MOGADOURO".
The saltire is an attribute of St. Andrew, the local patron saint. The chestnut tree (Port.: castanheira) is a canting element. The word "castanheira" is a less frequent alternative for "castanheiro""_castanheiro (its grammatical female form), meaning "chestnut tree"; this meaning is shown in the arms.
