A feudal lord in the early Edo period, he served Tokugawa Ieyasu and became a retainer of Hidetada. In 1617, he succeeded to his father's estate and became a feudal lord of Kozuke Province. He served as a lieutenant in the shogunate until 1634, and became the core of the shogunate cabinet. The war banner has white background with Sakai’s Kamon family emblem of wood sorrelwith sword blades in black topped with a red Maneki small streaming flag. The wood sorrel with sword blades emblem, one of the five major emblems, is a family emblem favored by warlords that combines the wood sorrel with a sword.
