Vilshofen Coat of Arms

Shield parted per bend, above left barry-bendy of Argent and Azure, beneath right Gules a panther passant Argent.
Seals were in use since 1434. The oldest seal already displayed the current pattern with a shield supported by an angel. The panther is a differentiation of the arms of the Palatine Counts of Spanheim. They founded the city in 1206 but lost it in 1241 to the Wittelsbach kin. The panther was displayed in an architectural sculpture from 1520 on the wall of the parish church, on seals from the 18th century and a painting from 1811. The panther was misinterpreted as a Bavarian lion by any roll of arms since 1523. Furthermore a crowned lion was confirmed by the authorities in 1820 and remained in literature, on every seal and also on the image of Otto Hupp. The lion was replaced by the panther in 1956.
