Description of the Flag

"The Town of Alderson has had a design for its flag since Feb. 22, 1973, when the Town Seal in various forms was adopted. It just never got the design onto a flag. E. Sterling "Tod" Hanger, Jr. created the design when he was still in high school. Hanger said, "I have always wanted to have the flag produced and am very excited to see this happening."

This year, [2009] Alderson Main Street decided to produce town flags for sale as a fundraising project. Council approved Main Street's request to use the logo and, with the help of Myrna Dembowski, the daughter of Eugene Ernest Boyd who was a graduate of Alderson High School's Class of 1939, two versions of the town flag have been produced. The town flag and two new flag poles will be dedicated at a Ceremony at Alderson Alumni Park at 3 p.m. on Friday, July 3. One flagpole was provided by the local VFW Post 6723, Jack Gadd, Commander, and the other in memory of Mary Sue Keadle Fullen. The flag will be dedicated in honor of Eugene Ernest Boyd.

The first version of the Alderson flag is 3' x 5' and has grommets for flying from a traditional flag pole. The first 10 are numbered and the first three will be auctioned off at the Community Homecoming Banquet at the Alderson Community Center for the Arts and Humanities starting at 6:30 p.m. on Friday, July 3, by Auctioneer Randy Burdette. The second version is 2' x 3' and has a sleeve for flying from a decorative flag pole. These will be for sale during the July 4th Celebration and are priced at $30 each.

Mayor Luther Lewallen said, "We are indebted to Tod Hanger and Alderson Main Street for producing these flags. I hope to see one flying from every porch very soon.""
