History and Description of the City of El Reno Flag

In the late 2008, the City of El Reno began using a flag to signify its presence at parades, City offices and other events. The flag, although just recently developed and designed, already has an interesting history. In early 2008, a group of 13 citizens and City administration set out to design and develop a new City seal. To get the design, the City held a nationwide contest for applicants to submit their design. In the end, a local artist won the contest and gave the City all rights to use the seal. The seal was formally adopted by the El Reno City Council and began being used by all City departments.

Later that year, City staff developed the current flag design. The flag depicts the El Reno City seal in blue (seals can also be gold and black/white) on a white background with a black border. The seal signifies El Reno's presence and location in the state of Oklahoma. Additionally, the seal shows the rich history of the city by signifying its establishment in 1889 on the bottom center of the seal. Additional elements on the seal, such as the stalks of wheat, symbolize the rich agricultural history that has been the backbone of both El Reno and the state of Oklahoma. The final element, the statement "Where History Meets the Future" shows El Reno's progress into the 21st Century, while still maintaining the rich history of the town.

Information, image of the seal and photo of the flag provided by Katie Eaton, Administrative Assistant, City of El Reno, Oklahoma.
