Description of the flag

Somerset County uses a flag like the pre-1801 British union flag, with an octagonal escutcheon showing the head of an Indian facing the hoist.

It is interesting that this County has continued to include a British Union Flag in its design, even though this Somerset County is situated within one of the 13 original USA States, Maryland, that fought the British for independence. The actual use of this first version of British Union Flag makes sense as that was the version in use when the County Flag was reportedly adopted in 1694.

According to Wikipedia, it says in part;
"The Flag of Somerset County, Maryland, United States, consists of a flag of Great Britain with the head of a Native American in the center. The flag was adopted in 1694 after the the County received a Royal Warrant from King William III of England to use the Union Jack as its flag."
