It is a fairly typical Portuguese municipal flag, with the coat of arms centred on a background quartered (town rank) yellow and green.

The arms are Sable on a maltese cross Argent a hawk Proper flying to the dexter surrounded by a garland of olive at dexter and cork oak at sinister both Vert and fruited Or and tied Gules along with a dimunute bunch of grapes Argent enhanced Purple. Mural crown argent with four visible towers (town rank) and white scroll reading in black upper case letters "VILA DE GAVIÃO".
Meaning:
"Gavião" means "hawk" (considering the location of this municipality, most probably meant is the Eurasian sparrowhawk (Latin: Accipiter nisus); the arms are therefore canting.

Presentation of Gavião

Gavião municipality had 4887 inhabitants in 2001 and consists of 4 communes covering 293,55 km². It is part of Portalegre District, traditional province and NUTS III Alto Alentejo, and 1999 ref. adm. region and C.C.R. / NUTS II Alentejo.
