The archeologist and researcher Luis Cuadra Cea (1885-1975) explained that the coat of arms of UNAN is composed of two metals, gold and silver, and of four colors, red, blue, green and black.
Gold is a symbol of power, wealth, wisdom, nobleness, and light.
Silver is a symbol of purity, obedience, firmness, vigilance, and eloquence.
Red is a symbol of victory, highness, audacity, and ardor.
Blue is a symbol of justice, truth, charity, beauty, and loyalty.
Green is a symbol of faith, friendship, and respect.
Black is a symbol of sadness and dolor and emphasizes prudence and honesty.

Science is highlighted by a silver sun on a blue field and the 16 golden tongues that surrounds it in a an elegant whirl, which inscribe eight silver stars recalling the first eight professors of the alma mater. The three-towered castle, with the central tower higher, represents the university, protected by the lion rampant in a posture of fight. The shield is surmounted by a knight's helmet, recalling that everyone should behave like knights in knowledge games and professional activities.
