Second son of Nagao Masakage, lord of Sakado Castle in Echigo Province. Adopted son of Kenshin Uesugi. In 1578, he succeeded to Kenshin's estate and became a feudal lord of Echigo. In 1589, he traveled to Sado, defeated the Hamo Honma clan, and brought Echigo and Sado under his control. The war banner has navy blue background with a gold circle in Shihan style. A flag slightly longer in length than a square was called a "Shihan"四半 in Japan then. Another war banner has white background with 毘kanji initials of Bishamonten 毘沙門天 to be the god of war in Japanese Buddhism.
