Flag of Vidovec

The symbols of Vidovec are prescribed by Decision Odluka o opisu i uporabi grba i zastave Općine Vidovec, adopted on 23 April 1998 by the Municipality Assembly and published on 2 May 1998 in the County official gazette Službeni vjesnik Varaždinske županije, No. 8. Decision Odluka o opisu i uporabi grba i zastave Općine Vidovec, adopted on 10 September 2009 and published on 11 September 2009 in Službeni vjesnik Varaždinske županije, No. 11, invalidates the previous Decision, although retaining the symbols.
The symbols are described in the Municipality Statutes Statut Općine Vidovec, adopted on 1 June 2006 and published on 8 June 2006 in Službeni vjesnik Varaždinske županije, No. 14. The Statutes Statut Općine Vidovec, adopted on 10 September 2009 and published on 30 September 2009 in Službeni vjesnik Varaždinske županije, No. 14, do not describe the symbols any longer, refering to a separate Decision that shall determine their details. The symbols are again described in the current Statutes Statut Općine Vidovec, adopted on 11 March 2013 and published on 12 March 2013 in Službeni vjesnik Varaždinske županije, No. 9 (text).

The symbols were approved on 23 October 1998 by the Ministry.

The flag is prescribed in Article 6 as "... in proportions 1:2, blue. In the middle of the flag is the coat of arms of the Municipality of Vidovec designed following the heraldic description."

The municipality organized a public competition for the design of the symbols. The conditions are more or less standard. Prizes were set to 5000 (ca. 1000 DEM at the time), 3000 and 1000 HRK and the deadline was set to 30 days (Varaždinske vijesti, 21 December 1994). The symbols were promoted on the ceremonial session of the Municipality Assembly held on 15 June 1996 (Varaždinske vijesti, 19 June 1996).

The municipal administration commissioned on 26 Mai 1997 to order Mr. Krunoslav čolo to produce the flag and the coat of arms. The municipal archives include drawings captioned "Adopted on 20 November 1997" and a Decision adopted on 27 November 1997 by the municipal administration. On 8 December 1997, the Municipality Assembly adopted a decision on the prescription of a proposal of flag and arms - basically of the same blazon and description as the current symbols - a blue flag with a golden coat of arms depicting a green cabbage.
These designs, however differ from the design currently in use - notably, the root of the plant is much deeper and has a stronger central axis than the lateral. According to the documentation, this was a proposal to be approved by the Ministry, which did not prevent the flag to be already used. The flag is still occasionaly used (photo).

Not satisfied with the artwork, the Ministry requested corrections. According to the municipal archives, the Heraldry Commission made unsatisfactory evaluation of proposed design on 12 July 1995, which was communicated on 29 January 1996 to the municipality. The municipality was instructed to work with members of the Commission to find a suitable graphic design. A new, improved design was submitted to the Commission on 8 September 1997.
