Presentation of Sveti Ilija

The Municipality of Sveti Ilija (3,532 inhabitants in 2001, 544 inhabitants in the village of Sveti Ilija) is located some 20 km south of Varaždin, in a hilly, wine-producing region.

In 2017, the municipality changed the symbols that are now in line with Croatian heraldry.
The coat of arms of the municipality of Sveti Ilija in blue is a silver hand growing from the left and holding a twice broken golden beam. The golden lightning is a symbol of Saint Elijah the Thunderer, and the hand that holds it symbolizes the tamed power of nature.

Coat of arms of Sveti Ilija

The coat of arms of Sveti Ilija is described in Article 5 of the Statutes as follows:

The coat of arms is in a shield shape, divided into four fields.
The shield is divided vertically by a golden thunderbolt and horizontally by two hands clasping each other in greeting. In the first and fourth fields, on a red background, stands a bunch of green grapes, in the centre of the second and third fields, of green colour, runs a horizontal wavy bar.

The Decision states that the golden thunderbolt is a symbol of St. Elias, the hand clasping it stand for the harnessed natural powers, unity and welcome, the red fields are for fire and blood, grapes for abundance and hard work, the green fields for agriculture, and the blue stripes for river Bednja.

The modification and simplification of the former coat of arms was, seemingly, not compliant enough with the strict Croatian heraldic rules. A new deisgn was publicly presented on 20 July 2016 during the Community Day (St. Eliah's Day; programm; photo, photo).
The new design is a further simplification of the "traditional" arms (even though tradition goes back only to 1994), "Azure a hand issuant from sinister argent holding a pale twice beviled or". It seems that the municipality did not adopt a Decision yet, probably waiting for approval from the Ministry. The minutes to the Municipality Assembly session held on 22 April 2016 state that the formal opinion of the State Archives is being awaited (to confirm that there is no historical coat of arms), which is part of the approval process.

The symbols of Sveti Ilija are described in the Municipality Statutes Statut Općine Sveti Ilija, adopted on 10 April 2013 by the Municipality Assembly and published on 12 April 2013 in the County official gazette Službeni vjesnik Varaždinske županije, No. 25 (text).
The symbols are presribed by Decision Odluka o grbu i zastavi Općine Sveti Ilija (text), adopted on 19 February 2014 by the Municiplaity Assembly and unpublished yet in any official gazette (probably waiting for official approval).

The flag is described in Article 5 of the Statutes as follows:

The flag of the Municipality of Sveti Ilija is made in proportions 1:2 and it is coloured blue.
In the middle, central part of the flag is the coat of arms of the Municipality of Sveti Ilija, made in accdordance with the heraldic description.

The Decision states that blue represents the sky and the sea, confidence, loyalty, wisdom, and faith.

The flag was, probably, originally prescribed with two different sizes, the reverse featuring a depiction of St. Elijah (image).
