Presentation of Virovitica

Virovitica is a town with about 23,000 inhabitantsn (16,000 in the urban area itself) in the northwestern part of Slavonia. Much important historically, it has lost much of its influence in modern time, but even though the County formed in northern Slavonia after the liberation from the Turks was named after it, even if the capital was already set to Osijek.

The symbols of Virovitica are prescribed by Decision Odluka o grbu i zastavi Grada Virovitice, adopted in 2004 by the Town Assembly and published in the Town official gazette Službeni vjesnik Grada Virovitice, No. 19.
The Town Statutes, adopted by the Town Assembly in 2006, include the description of symbols in Article 4.

The flag is in proportions 1:2, white with the coat of arms in the middle.

The coat of arms is the traditional coat of arms of the town, "Gules, on a mount vert a lion rampant or, holding in dexter a sabre argent hilted or above his head".
The coat of arms is, apparently, regularly shown with a golden sabre while the Statutes (and presumably also the 2004 Decision) clearly state that the sabre should be silver. The golden sabre is also shown in the vectorized image availableon the town website. I believe that this is only an error without any meaning and that the sabre should indeed be silver, only nobody noticed the error so it spread for a long time (a decade or so).
