The rooster on a cannonball reminds the legend on a battle against the Turks, when it was fired instead of the cannonball, after which the Turks lift the siege. Green stands for the Drava lowlands, while the stars are taken from the family arms of Ernušt (image of the painting by Zdravko Šabarić, 1488, Glas Podravine, 22 May 1998). Sigismund Ernušt, Bishop of Pech and Ban of Dalmatia, Croatia and Slavonia, rebuilt in 1494 the Castle of Đurđevac (Glas Podravine, 7 February 1996). Under his rule, the town reached its best medieval prosperity.

The former design of the coat of arms was used in a seasons' greetings published on 27 December 1996 by the Town administration in the regional journal Glas Podravine i Prigorja (image).
A similar coat of arms is used on a flag of the 105th Brigade of Croatian Army - Bjelovar made in 1991 together with the arms of Bjelovar and Čazma; the Brigade was raised in Bjelovar, Čazma and Đurđevac, therefore the arms. It differs from the depiction in the journal above in some minor details, and most notably, there is the State coat of arms in the space between the inscription and the top of the castle.

Another variation of the coat of arms is shown in the other local newspaper, Podravec, 3 may 1991 (image). The elements are very similar, with only minor artistic variations, with two larger differences - the space between the inscription and the top of the castle is taken by the historical coat of arms of Croatia (chequy shield) while in the green field under the castle and above the wavy line is the date date 3.5.1945. (3rd May 1945), which must be the local Liberation Day of Đurđevac in the Second World War.
