Presentation of Barilović

The municipality of Barilović is locatyed about 15 km due south-west of Karlovac, between rivers Korana and Mrežnica that run almost parallely for some 40 km. It has almost 3,100 inhabitants in no less then 44 villages, just over 10% being Serbs. Until 2006 the name of the municipality in the official gazette was Barilovići.

The symbols of Barilović are described in the current Town Statutes Statut Općine Barilović (text), published on 14 July 2009 in the Municipality official gazette Službeni glasnik Općine Barilović, No. 2, although they were adopted and validated by the central authorities earlier, prior 2006.

The symbols were designed by the Heraldic Art d.o.o. company, from Rijeka.

The flag is described in Article 6 of the Municipality Statutes as in proportions 1:2, yellow with the coat of arms "set in the centre of it vertically to the length of the flag". This is a rare example of a Croatian local flag with explicitly stated orientation of the coat of arms, even though that this orientation is apparently considered as default and that only flags are designed different from this only exceptionally.

The coat of arms of Barilović is described in Article 5 of the Municipality Statutes as "Gules a bend argent between two swords bendwise of the same hilted and pommeted or".
The Statutes also provide some explanations: the red field symbolizes the fight for freedom in the history and in the recent times, the silver bend stands for river Korana, and the swords, turned towards dexter - the positive heraldic side - stand for the fight against occupations and have symbolized for centuries the struggle for freedom.
