Overview

The municipality of San Rafael Las Flores (12,137 inhabitants in 2010; 84 sq. km) is located in the Santa Rosa department, southeastern Guatemala.
The municipality was established on 2 March 1860 by Governmental Decree, approving a Provincial Decree signed on 25 February 1860. The former municipality of Mataquescuintla was split into two new
municipalities, San Carlos Alzatate, for the natives, and San Rafael, for the people of European origin, still representing 99.6% of the population of the municipality. The territory of the new municipality
matches the old El Potrero estate, purchased by the Government on 26 April 1858 after the death of its owner, Priest Mariano Méndez.

The Flag

In "Prensa Libre", 21 May 2012, O. Cardona reports the inauguration of the flag of San Rafael Las Flores. The flag, designed by school teacher María Duarte, is vertically divided yellow-white-blue with the municipal coat of arms in the middle. Yellow symbolizes energy, honor and loyalty. White symbolizes kindness, strength and perfection. Blue symbolizes intelligence, knowledge and loyalty.
The coat of arms features coffee grains, onions, tomatoes - the main crops in the municipality - and the Ayarza laguna - the main tourist spot in the municipality.
Two copies of the flag will be offered to the San Carlos University.
