Introduction

The municipality of Xunqueira de Espadanedo (in Spanish, Junquera de Espadañedo; 1,002 inhabitants in 2007; 27.65 sq. km) is located in the Province of Ourense, Southern Galicia.

Xunqueira de Espadanedo is mostly famous for the monastery of Santa María de Xunqueira de Espadañedo, founded in 1050 by Augustinian monks. In 1170, the monastery was placed under the rule of the bigger, neighbouring monastery of Montederramo; it was eventually transferred in 1546 to the Congregation of Castile, which had been founded in the XVth century by Martín de Vargas to reform the Cistercian Order in Spain.

Description

The flag proposal was submitted by the Municipal Council of Xunqueira de Espadanedo to the Heraldry Commission of the Government of Galicia and the Council of Presidency, Public Administration and Justice; the design was subsequently approved by the Government Council of Galicia on 17 July 2008 by Decree 171/2008 published on 19 August 2008 in the Galician official gazette.

According to the Decree, the flag is blue with a [descending] diagonal stripe chequered white-red and two rushes placed in the upper fly and lower hoist, respectively.

Coat of Arms

The Galician Wikipedia shows a gallery of the coat of arms of the Galician municipalities: including the coat of arms of Xunqueira de Espadanedo: .

The coat of arms is azure with a bend chequy argent and gules over a rush or and a fleur-de-lis or in each part of the field. The flag is therefore a simplified banner of the municipal arms, the fleurs-de- lis being replaced by rushes.

The rushes (in Spanish, "junco"; in Gallego – probably – "xunco"; from Latin, "juncus") are canting for the name of the place, which probably means "a place planted with reeds" (in French, mostly local, especially in Normandy, "jonqueraie").

The Galician official gazette is available online, but you need to pay a fee of 3 € per Decree or 30 € per month.
