Symbols of La Carrera

The flag and arms of La Carrera are prescribed by a Decree adopted on 13 April 1998 by the Provincial Government, signed on 18 April 1998 by the President of the Government, and published on 27 May 1998 in the official gazette of Castilla y León, No. 98 (text).
The flag is not described in the Decree. The coat of arms is described as follows:

Coat of arms: Azure a mount argent surmounted with a chapel of the same roofed gules superimposed to the mount a path or heading to the chapel. The shield surmounted with a Royal Spanish crown.

The Royal Academy of History assessed the submitted drawing, since the written description was incorrect. The proposed arms could be accepted, providing modifications are made. It should not be attempted in any way to realistically represent the St. Barbara chapel. The path should be suppressed and all the elements should be represented in a manner compliant with the schematism of good style. The dimension of the mount should be decreased while that of the chapel should be dramatically increased. The shield should be surmounted by the Royal Spanish crown instead of the odd coronet shown on the drawing. Accordingly, the coat of arms would be "Azure a chapel proper on a mount argent". The resulting design is quite poor, therefore it could be improved by a adding St. Barbara's traditional attribute, a tower.
