Description of banner:
It is a red - yellow vertical bicolour with a white bannerhead. At ist top edge is a chequered bar divided into red and yellow. Below is the coat of arms subscribed by the city's name.

Coat of Arms

Description of coat of arms:
The shield is divided by a bend wavy into red and golden(=yellow). The red field shows three golden (=yellow) ears of grain ordered like a fan and stuck into in a flat vessel. The other shows a red spindle.
Meaning:
According to source the wavy line is symbolizing river Ems, the grain is symbolizing agriculture and the spindle textiles industry.

The coat of arms was approved by Oberpräsident of Prussian province of Westphalia on 17 July 1939. The flag probably was adopted at the same time.
