Coat of Arms

Shield Vert, divided by a saltire Or, each quarter charged with three Greek crosslets Or.
Meaning:
Merenberg was founded by the Lords of Merenberg in the 13th century, who granted city rights in 1290 and ruled the city until 1328. The oldest seal dates from 1321, and displays a towered embattled wall, with the arms of the Lords of Merenburg, a saltire and 12 crosslets, beneath. The seals remained unchanged until 1816, when only a undetermined building was used. The current arms are those of the Lords of Merenburg and were officially approved in 1950. Also in 1950 the municipality gained the rank of a market town, after it had lost city rights in 1803, confirmed in 1816.
