Munster City Coat of Arms

Description of coat of arms:
In a silver (= white) shield is a blue dragon, armed and tongued red. The blue chief is superimposed by a silver (= white) sword.
Meaning:
The elements of the arms are taken from the legend of St. George. The sword is the proper weapon to fight the evil, symbolized by the dragon. Both are alluding to the close connection between city and army. In 1893 one of the biggest German military training areas was established in the village of Munster. The strong military forces, which had their base here before WW1 and WW2 and again since 1956 formed the character of the village and caused an economic advancement and a growth of population. As a result Munster gained city rights in 1967. The coat of arms had been adopted in 1937 and was confirmed with different colours by Regierungspräsident Lüneburg in 1967. Source: Stadler 1970, p.60
