Description

Black-yellow-black banner [hanging flag] with the arms. Sources: flag from Staack 1997, arms from Stadler 1964-1971.

Stefan Schwoon, 7 Mar 2001

The arms are a combination of the Palatine lion of the Pfalz and the arms of the Wittelsbach kin (see the arms of Bavaria). The city was a possession of the Wittelsbach kin, who were also Palatine Counts of Rhine. Amberg became a city at the end of the 13th century. The arms first appear on the seals in the 14th century. (...) The arms have not changed ever since. (...)

Literature: Stadler 1965, p.18.
