About the flag

The University of Chile emblem consists simply of a dark blue cloth with the university shield in the center. This flag is recognized as official by the Statutes of the University. Web image (two photos of the some halls).

There is also a sports emblem, with the sporting logo called El Chuncho (I could not find in the Web images of this emblem, so I doubt its existence and/or its official character).

Universidad de Chile was established by a Constitutional Law promulgated on 19 November 1842, on the model of the English, French and German universities, "fitted to Chile's special conditions." Its first Rector (1843-1865), Andrés Bello López (1781-1865), is considered as Latin America's greatest humanist ever.

Born in Venezuela, Bello was a noted poet ("Oda a la Vacuna," "A la Victoria de Bailén") and philologist ("Análisis Ideológico de los Tiempos de la Conjugación Castellana," 1841). Sent to London in 1810 by the Venezuelan provisional government with Luis López Méndez, Bello supported the Venezuelan government after the proclamation of independence on 5 July 1811. After the Spanish reconquest of the country, Bello stayed in London, both jobless and nationless. Bello joined the vast community of Spanish liberals exiled during the absolutist periods (1814-1820 and 1823-1833) and intellectuals sent to London by the newly independent South American countries, such as Francisco de Miranda. Bello spent a lot of time in the British Museum library and the National Library. Influenced by Jeremias Bentham's utilitarian ideas, Bello became en expert in international law. With Juan García del Río, Bello edited two reviews, "Biblioteca Americana" (1823) and "Repertorio Americana" (1826-1827) aimed at spreading culture, science and critics to Latin America. Bello emigrated in 1829 to Chile, where he took Chilean citizenship in 1832. Elected Senator in 1837, he was the main redactor of the Civil Code of the Republic of Chile, released in 1857 and used as a model in Ecuador and Colombia.

The university is composed of 14 Faculties and 4 Institutes, scattered over 5 campuses (Andrés Bello, Beauchef, Dra. Eloisa Diaz, Gómez Millas, and Sur).
