The municipality of Penha (32,531 inhabitants in 2019; 5,878 ha) is located 100 km north of Florianópolis.

Penha emerged around the chapel dedicated to St. John the Baptist established on 27 April 1759 in the Itapocoroy whale fishery. In February 1777, the fishery was re-settled by Azorean whalers expelled from Santa Catarina Island by the Spaniards.
The municipality of Penha was established on 21 June 1958, separating from Itajaí, and inaugurated on 19 June 1958.

Penha is Santa Catarina's municipality with the biggest number of beaches (19). It is also famous as home of Beto Carrero World, a theme park, deemed the biggest in South America, inaugurated in 1991 by the entertainer Beto Carrero (1937-2008).
